The Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Leibniz-IPHT), Research Department Microscopy in the Group of Biomedical Imaging, is looking for a Research Assistant / PhD candidate (f/m/d)in part time (50% position). The position is limited to three years.
The Leibniz-IPHT is a university independent research institute with close connection to the Friedrich-Schiller- University Jena and member of the Leibniz association.
Your tasks: Pandemic Forecasting Based on Mathematical Models and Machine Learning
We aim to generate models capable of predicting the SARS/COV2 pandemic load based on parameters of mathematical models. The forecast includes the expected cases being sent to hospital and the need for intensive care units. We already have acquired a good data basis from the previous years to be used for training the models to be developed. We intend to use modern methods such as robust sparse model discovery (E-SINDy)“ to identify suitable models.
The implementation should be done in a modern performant computer language such as Julia, but Python or Matlab are alternative options. CUDA-based acceleration of calculations based on these models would be good.
Within the scope of this work it is possible to obtain a PhD at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.
We expect:
A university degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science
Experience in Computer Science and Programming in one of Matlab / Python / Julia or a similar language
Experience and interest in mathematical models, mathematical modelling and model discovery
First steps in machine learning
We offer:
An open welcoming culture as well as a friendly and dedicated team committed to modern science and technology
An interdisciplinary research environment with the goal of translation and application-oriented research
Intensive supervision during doctoral studies and publications
The PhD promotion and further development of our employees
Salary:
Salary will be in accordance with the regulations of the TV-L.
We are a modern, internationally oriented research institute. The compatibility of work and family is one of our central concerns. We value diversity and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of gender, disability, nationality or ethnic and social background.
