Multiple funded Research Assistant/Teaching Assistant positions (Spring 2023, Fall 2023) are available in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh. Candidates will work with Dr. Xiaowei Jia towards Ph.D. degrees. The research work focuses on applications of data mining and machine learning techniques in scientific applications, e.g., Earth science, hydrology, agriculture, and turbulence modeling.
Dr. Xiaowei Jia's research interests include deep learning for scientific and social problems, physics-guided machine learning, spatio-temporal data mining, and fairness-driven machine learning. He has published over 50 papers in top-tier data mining and AI journals and conferences as well as top journals in scientific domains. More information can be found at scholar.google.com
The students will work on the following Research Topics:
(1) Data mining in scientific applications, e.g., hydrology, agriculture, and computational fluid dynamics;
(2) Integrating physical knowledge into machine learning algorithms;
(3) Fairness-aware algorithms in spatio-temporal data mining;
Requirements:
(1) Undergraduate or MS students with degrees in Computer Science/Engineering, EE, Mathematics or related majors.
(2) Strong programming (in Tensorflow/Pytorch) and/or mathematical skills.
(3) Candidates with research experience in data mining, machine learning (or NLP, CV). Candidates with publications are preferred.
(5) Strong motivation and passion for conducting research and solving challenging problems.
Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Dr. Xiaowei Jia (1point3acres.com) with the following documentation:
(1) A current CV;
