【独立】more salary for university professor
16022
To improve the quality of education, university should spend more money on salary for university professor.
It is now quite common that the teachers of universities are not serious about their teaching. They do not teach earnestly or be concerned with the quality of students’ homework. In other words, it’s seemed that they do not care whether the students have truly learned anything at all. Solutions to this phenomenon have long been discussed among the academics, and possible treatments have been raised to make up for it. One of the proposals is that the university should spend more money on salary for professors. However, according to my perspectives, this method won’t work out at all. For the increase in salary is such a small incentive that won’t affect the attitude of professors, and the fact that the quality of education doesn’t solely depend on the attitude of teachers, but on the performance of students as well, which won’t display much difference whether the professors teach industriously or not.
Firstly, the professors don’t depend on their salary to cover a cozy life, especially for those have their own fields of research, which give them profitable income. For example, if a teacher’s income is $5,000 per month, however, what he can gain from his research career is $50,000 per month. As a matter of fact, the teacher won’t care about how much money he could make in teaching at all. Even the university doubled his salary, still, it were only a minor percent of his total income. Not to mention that the increase in salary won’t be that much in extend. So the salary incentive method will serve no effect on the attitude of teachers.
In addition, the inner incentives of students play the most important role in one’s pursuit of better education. When a student truly wants to learn something, he will study hard in class, being focused on each word of the teacher, and come to the teacher for further assistance if there is anything he doesn’t grasp very well. Even the teacher didn’t take teaching seriously, he wouldn’t refuse a young’s eager for knowledge. So the quality of education depends more on the attitude of students rather than it of the teacher.
In a word, spending more money on professors’ salary won’t be an effective method to lift the quality of education. For the incentive is not sufficient to arouse the interest of teachers, and even the quality of education doesn’t depend on teacher at all, as we can see, it depends more on the learners themselves. So instead of focusing on professors, trying to stimulate the interest of students could be a better way.
