Dr. Yu Li is an incoming assistant professor (starting from the end of 2020) of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He has two opening Ph.D. positions for Fall 2021.
Yu obtained his Ph.D. ('20, CS), M.S. ('16, CS) from KAUST, and his B.S. ('15, biosciences) from USTC.
During his four-year Ph.D. study, he published more than 30 papers in the top bioinformatics and machine learning (ML) venues, including Nature Communications, PNAS, ICLR (oral), et al. In addition to that, he has around 10 papers in the publication pipeline, targeting on Nature, Nature Methods, Micrbobiomes, et al., by the end of the Ph.D. study.

Regarding his research, he is working at the intersection between machine learning, healthcare, and bioinformatics, developing new machine learning methods to resolve the computational problems in biology and healthcare, especially the structured learning problems.
As a Ph.D. student, he had supervised several M.S. and intern students. All the supervised Chinese students have papers published or in preparation under his supervision: liyu95.com
As a supervisor in computer science, he has the following advantages:
1. He is very productive, familiar with the technical details of the recent papers. As a result, he can provide detailed instructions to the students. In addition to being a supervisor, who would provide support, he would also be a collaborator to the students, who will write the papers together with the students.
2. In addition to the CUHK computing facility, he can get access to a supercomputer with 6000 nodes and 380K cores, as well as a GPU cluster with 300 V100 cards. There is no limitation regarding the computational resources that the students can get access to.
3. He has built the collaboration network across the world, spanning from the US, Australia, Middle East, Mainland, to Hong Kong, including researchers at MIT, Stanford, GaTech, Purdue, KAUST, HKUST, CUHK, HKU, et al., as well as researchers from companies in the industry, including Google, Tencent, et al. Students would have plenty of opportunities to collaborate with the top-tier researchers from different places.
4. He has collaborations with both researchers working on computing and collaborators working on wet experiments. He can get access to the first-hand data, and the predictions from the developed methods can be potentially validated by wet experiments. Such works are doomed to fly high.
5. He changed his major from biosciences to CS. He knows clearly about the student's concerns. He will be supportive of the student's job hunting upon graduation.
Requirements: Students with a strong background in computing are invited to apply. Preferred majors are CS, statistics, mathematics, and biosciences. But major is not a big problem as long as the student has a strong learning ability with sufficient foundational computing background. Knowledge in medicine or biology is a plus but not required.
