UCLA Stats PhD Program 介绍

UCLA, Univeristy of California, Los Angeles, 位于温暖的南加，地中海气候，夏季干燥，冬季有微降雨。我在UCLA的统计系，想从师资和课程介绍下Stats Ph.D. program。
UCLA统计系不大，只占据着mathematical science building最高的一层楼。统计系里有个很出名的Center for Vision, Cognition, Learning, and Autonomy（VCLA)，是由朱松纯教授带领的computer vision方向的和cs joint的项目。vcla.stat.ucla.edu
我对于这个项目不是特别理解，所以是介绍传统的统计博士项目。
师资
在UCLA Stats里面，教授研究的方向主要有三个：
1. cross discipline statistics
2. mathematical statistics
3. general statistical learning and inference
第一个方向，我叫做cross discipline statistics，是和其他学科joint的，比如politial science, geology, psychology。
第二个方向，mathematical statistics，是偏向于理论证明和experiment design的。
第三个方向是比较general的，统计学的inference和machine learning。

教授母校还是很给力的，系里最近新老师也是招了不少。funding还是挺足的。
课程
博士第一年和第二年是和master一起上课的，主要是machine learning methods，mathematical statistics, statistical techniques, eg bootstrap, regularized likelihood etc. 必修课程大概一年出头就可以完成，可以在统计系或者ee或者cs其他系选修自己感兴趣的课。
通常博士录取的时候是会先和老师陶瓷好，所以第一年可能就会跟着老师做科研。国际生第二年暑假的时候需要过candidacy exam，包括一个written report和oral presentation的开题报告。advanced to candidacy（act）之后，需要在三年的时间内完成phd program。

funding
博士是全额奖学金，一个月2k+的生活费。博士第二年开始就会开始做teaching assistant（才有生活费），第一年只需要改作业。act三年之后，还没有毕业的话，国际生需要支付一个学期5k的non resident tuition。
