CMU SCS下属的Institute for Software Research开设了一个新项目MSE-SS(Master of Software Engineering - Scalable Systems)。

Dear Incoming Student,

Again, congratulations on your enrollment into the MSIT-SE program at Carnegie Mellon University!

The University is now offering a new degree program, entitled the Masters of Software Engineering - Scalable Systems (MSE-SS). As an enrollee in the MSIT-SE, you are eligible to transfer to this new degree program.

What are the advantages of the new program?

The MSE-SS program shares the same common core with the MSIT-SE, which covers software management, requirements, architecture and analysis. However, the MSE-SS further focuses on Internet-scale, data-intensive systems, which are commonly used at companies, such as Amazon, Audible, Google, Netflix and Microsoft. The MSE-SS program also adds a required, non-tuition bearing, summer internship that enables students to gain hands-on training that complements our new curriculum. When MSE-SS students return from their internship, they will engage in an intensive one-semester project in the following Fall semester.

To accommodate the new internship semester, the MSE-SS program is a 16-month program, whereas the MSIT-SE program is only 12-months. Therefore, if you are interested in transferring to the new program, you should think carefully about how to accommodate the additional time you will need in the program.

Please see the attached table to see the differences in plans of study.

Will the new program cost more?

Because the summer internship semester is non-tuition bearing, the MSE-SS program cost is similar to the MSIT-SE program cost. However, students should expect additional costs associated with the longer 16-month program, including, but not limited to, the additional cost of housing at the location where the internship is hosted, and the additional transportation costs between the internship location and Pittsburgh. Many industry internships are paid, however, so these costs may be covered by the money earned at the internship. If a student cannot obtain an internship, then they will need to complete an on-campus project, which may not be paid.

How will the new program affect my visa?

The University will work with students to update their visas before or shortly after their arrival to campus.

How will I find an internship?

SCS and the MSE program provide students with access to career services aimed at helping students prepare for internship applications and interviews. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the students to obtain their internship.

If I don’t find an internship, what will I do?

Students will be allowed to complete an on-campus project with a faculty mentor.

What do I have to do to transfer to the new program?

At this point, please complete this Google Form to let us know if you wish to change to the MSE-SS program or remain in the MSIT-SE program. (I sent this to your CMU and personal email addresses, but only one response is needed). Please continue to complete your visa paperwork as you were originally instructed for the MSIT-SE program. We will send further guidance over the next several weeks.

Regards,
