导师介绍
Ningshi Yao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at George Mason University, where she directs the Control, Intelligent Autonomy, and Optimization (CIAO) Lab. She received her PhD and MS degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology and her BS degree from Zhejiang University. Her research spans the convergence of control theory, robotics, machine learning, and human-robot interaction, with a primary focus on building intelligent systems that enhance human capabilities. Her work is supported by a significant portfolio of federal grants totaling over $4 million, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01, the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) as the leading Principal Investigator (PI). Yao is a recipient of the 2026 NSF CAREER Award from the Energy, Power, Control, and Learning (EPCL) program.

As an active scholar in the robotic and control community, Yao serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC): Systems, the IEEE American Control Conference (ACC), and the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC). She is also on the Organizing Committee for IFAC NecSys 2025 and IEEE RO-MAN 2026. Beyond her research, Yao is the Founder of the Airborne Robotics Cup (ARC), a national robotic blimp competition for youth STEM education.

学校介绍
George Mason University (GMU) is a public research university headquartered in Fairfax County, Virginia. Established in 1972, GMU is now the largest public research university in the Commonwealth of Virginia, serving over 38,000 students, and is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity,” with its College of Engineering and Computing ranked #76 among Best Engineering Schools In US.

Location: GMU's Fairfax campus sits just minutes from Washington, D.C., and the university also operates a rapidly growing campus at Mason Square in Arlington — about 3.5 miles from amazon.com's HQ2. Mason Square anchors the Rosslyn-Ballston Innovation Corridor and is home to the new Institute for Digital Innovation and the Fuse research building, which focuses on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, power/energy, and control systems. Being embedded in this corridor puts students close to 23 Fortune 500 company headquarters, major federal agencies and national labs, and one of the densest technology and defense job markets in the country — a strong pipeline for internships, collaborations, and careers after graduation.

Momentum: GMU has been on a fast upward trajectory: it earned R1 research status, and its research expenditures grew by nearly 30% over the past five years, reaching $282 million in 2024. With growing enrollment, expanding faculty, and major investment in its Arlington innovation district, GMU is quickly becoming one of the most dynamic research environments on the East Coast for robotics and AI research.
