Postdoc Position: Machine Vision, Physical AI, and Mechanization for Specialty Crops
A postdoctoral research associate position is immediately available in scholar.google.com's AgFood Sensing & Intelligence group in the Department of Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU). MSU is ranked 85th globally by TIME, recognized as a Public Ivy, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), and the first Land-Grant University in the United States. Particularly, it is ranked among the Top 15 institutions worldwide in Agriculture & Forestry.
Research Focus
The selected candidate will work primarily on on-farm/-machine sensing, physical artificial intelligence (AI) systems, and automation/mechanization for specialty crops (high-value vegetables, fruits, and nuts). This position will be an initial 12-month opportunity with a competitive salary and the possibility of an extension depending on performance and funding. It may start in the summer of 2026 or on a later agreed-upon date.
The successful candidate is expected to assist with leading research efforts in leveraging advanced sensing, machine vision, physical AI systems, automation/mechanization technologies, as well as fast prototyping techniques to automate otherwise labor-intensive production tasks (e.g., automated harvesting, on-machine sensing, in-orchard sorting, vision-based crop management), and to generate high-quality peer-reviewed publications. The postdoc will meet regularly with scholar.google.com to discuss best practices in experiments, manuscript preparation, and mentoring. The selected candidate may also engage in activities such as grant proposal development and class teaching as needed for their professional development. Successful candidates need to be creative, self-motivated/discplined, adaptive, and dedicated, collaborate in multidisciplinary environments, and communicate research outcomes actively through journal publications and deliver presentations at conferences.
