Research Focus
The selected candidate will work primarily on postharvest automation for specialty crops (vegetable/fruit/nut) integrating:
  • Machine/computer vision
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)/ deep learning applied to physical systems
  • Mechatronics/automation systems
  • Intelligent sensing & robotics
The goal is to develop next-generation automation systems to improve efficiency, quality assessment, and handling of specialty crop products.

Responsibilities
The selected student will:
  • Design and integrate machine vision, AI, and automation systems for postharvest applications
  • Conduct experiments, prototype hardware systems, and develop/test algorithms
  • Publish research in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals
  • Present findings at national and international conferences
  • Meet regularly with Dr. Lu for research mentoring and technical guidance

For professional development, the student may also have opportunities to:
  • Participate in grant proposal development
  • Assist with teaching undergraduate or graduate courses
  • Mentor undergraduate or junior graduate students

Successful candidates are expected to be creative, self-motivated, focused, dependable, and able to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary research environments.
 
Minimum Requirements
  • MS/BS degree in Biosystems/Agricultural Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related fields.
  • Demonstrated relevant publication records in machine/computer vision, mechatronics, and or AI/robotics (evidenced by publications).
  • Strong computer programming skills in C++, Python, and or Matlab.
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering design (e.g., Solidwork/AutoCAD) and prototyping (e.g., 3D printing)
  • Excellent scientific writing and professional communication skills (Englis).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in applied machine vision system development
  • Hardware prototyping and system integration experience
  • Experience developing automation systems for horticultural or specialty crops
