Postdoc Position: Machine Vision, AI and Mechanization for Specialty Crops
A postdoctoral research associate position is available in Dr. twitter.com's AgFood Sensing & Intelligence group in the Department of Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU). MSU is time.com, recognized as a en.wikipedia.org, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), and the first Land-Grant University in the United States. Particularly, it is ranked among the Top 15 institutions worldwide in Agriculture & Forestry

Research Focus
The selected candidate will work primarily on on-farm sensing, and automation / mechanization for specialty crops (high-value vegetables, fruits, and nuts). This position will be an initial 12-month opportunity with the possibility of an extension depending on performance and funding. It may start in summer of 2026 or on a later agreed-upon date.

The successful candidate is expected to assist with leading research efforts in leveraging advanced sensing, machine vision, and artificial intelligence (AI)/automation/mechanization technologies as well as fast prototyping techniques to automate otherwise labor-intensive production tasks (e.g., automated harvesting, vision-based crop management), and to generate high-quality peer-reviewed publications. The postdoc will meet regularly with Dr. Yuzhen Lu to discuss best practices in experiments, manuscript preparation, and mentoring. The selected candidate may also engage in activities such as grant proposal development and class teaching as needed for their professional development. Successful candidates need to be creative, self-motivated/discplined, adaptive, and dedicated, collaborate in multidisciplinary environments, and communicate research outcomes actively through journal publications and deliver presentations at conferences.

Minimum Requirements
  • The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in Biosystems/Agricultural Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, or closely related fields.
  • Successful candidates are expected to have demonstrated research experience evidenced in peer-reviewed publication records in computer vision and AI, mechatronics, and system integration for automated tasks.
  • The candidate is expected to have excellent scientific writing and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications
  • Engineering skills in machinery design, hardware prototyping, control, and systems integration are desirable.
  • Prior experience in the development of real-time mechanical vision systems for specialty crop harvest automation / mechanization is an advantage.

Application
Correspondences about the position may be sent to Dr. twitter.com at 1point3acres.com.  Review of applications will commence immediately and proceed until the position is filled. Video pre-interview meetings may be scheduled for potential candidates if necessary.
