(Biogenic Mixing)
(Turbulence)
(Active Energy Flux Control)

  • 扎实的流体力学实验技能;
  • 熟悉粒子追踪测速(PTV)或粒子成像测速(PIV);

他在国际顶级期刊如 Science Advances, Physical Review Letters, PNAS Nexus, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physical Review Fluids, Physics of Fluids, Chaos 等发表多篇论文,是 Physical Review Fluids, Physics of Fluids, Journal of Fluid Mechanics

🎓 Ph.D. Opening (Full Scholarship) – Fall 2026

Fang Research Group, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Swanson School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh

The Fang Research Group, led by Prof. Lei Fang in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, is seeking one fully funded Ph.D. student to begin in Fall 2026.

🔬 Research Areas

Our group focuses on Fluid Mechanics, particularly the following topics:

  • Biogenic Mixing
  • Turbulence
  • Active Energy Flux Control
Prof. Fang’s team has pioneered a new research direction—actively manipulating the energy flux within turbulent flows to achieve cross-scale control, from microfluidic systems to geophysical flows. This emerging field has already achieved significant breakthroughs across multiple experimental settings.

🧪 Applicant Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have one or more of the following:

  • Solid experimental skills in fluid mechanics;
  • Experience with Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) or Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV);
  • Strong research potential and good English communication skills.

👨🔬 About Prof. Lei Fang

Dr. Lei Fang earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University (2020) under the supervision of Prof. Nicholas Ouellette, a leading expert in fluid mechanics. He joined the University of Pittsburgh the same year as an Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering and holds secondary appointments in Mechanical and Materials Science and Bioengineering.

Prof. Fang has published in leading journals such as Science Advances, Physical Review Letters, PNAS Nexus, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physical Review Fluids, Physics of Fluids, and Chaos. He serves as a reviewer for journals including Physical Review Fluids, Physics of Fluids, and Journal of Fluid Mechanics, as well as a panel reviewer for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). He has received multiple NSF research grants.

Prof. Fang’s students have achieved exceptional research results. For example, his first Ph.D. student published six first-author papers, including two Editor’s Picks (Physics of Fluids and Physical Review Fluids), one Top Paper of 2024 in PRF, and one first-author paper in Science Advances.
