Job Description

Ph.D. position is available in the Intelligent Sensing Laboratory (ISL) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, blogs.umass.edu. The position is jointly affiliated with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) and the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS).

The successful candidate will conduct both fundamental and applied research in machine learning, automation, and their applications to flexible electronics manufacturing or medical decision-support systems.

Required Qualifications

B.S. And M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

Strong hands-on skills and experience in programming or mechatronics

Strong motivation to conduct both theoretical and experimental work

Highly self-motivated and persistent in solving practical experimental problems

Ability to perform physical tasks as lifting (up to ~ 50 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion as required

Required skills

Programming in Matlab/Labview, Python or C/C++ for data acquisition and processing

Experimental design, data collection, analysis and interpretation

Preferred Qualifications

Peer-reviewed conference and journal publications

Strong technical writing, communication and presentation skills

Note: A strong interest in practical problem-solving and hands-on experimental work is valued more than any specific skills and qualifications.
