We are recruiting fully funded PhD students in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at the University of Houston. The successful candidates will join assistant professor Jinping Hu’s group and work on: 1) metamorphism and alterations in planetary materials, primarily martian meteorites, using electron microscopy techniques; and/or 2) shock-wave dynamic compression experiments on planetary analogs. The projects will also involve isotope geochemistry and geochronology analyses under close collaboration with other faculty members in EAS as well as Caltech, JPL and New Mexico Tech.

Candidates should have a bachelor's degree by the time of Fall 2026 enrollment. Strong background in physical science or engineering, self-motivation in research and enthusiasm for planetary science are highly preferred.

The university’s admission requirements and deadlines can be found at: publications.uh.edu

Interested candidates please send a CV containing coursework and research experience to Dr. uh.edu’s email (1point3acres.com) with the subject line “shock-wave prospective student”.

UH-EAS has a large number of faculty members studying comprehensive aspects of geology, geochemistry and geophysics and a rich collection of experimental facilities. The department has long-term connections with energy industry and NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The university’s core facilities and state Center for Semiconductivity provide access to state-of-the-art electron microscopes.
