Fully Funded Ph.D. Student Position in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at RPI Spring/Fall 2026
We have one fully-funded Ph.D. position in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). We seek students with a strong background in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or related fields. The start date is preferably Spring 2026, but can be extended to Fall 2026 if the position is not filled. The Ph.D. student will work with Dr. Yinan Wang, a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the ISE department at RPI. His research focuses on engineering-driven machine learning methods with applications to advanced manufacturing, material science, and other complex physical systems. His research is currently funded by several projects from the Department of Energy and IBM.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree (required by the start date) in Engineering (IE, EE, ME, Material Science, ChemE, etc.), Computer Science, Statistics, or other related fields.
Necessary mathematical foundation.
Good English writing and communication skills.
Strong motivation and interest in research.
Prior research experience will be a plus.
Experiences in Reinforcement Learning, Machine Learning, Programming will be a plus.

The ISE Department (ise.rpi.edu) offers degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. ISE has a rich history of addressing important societal challenges since 1933. Research focuses on core areas of industrial and systems engineering with strengths in optimization, data science, manufacturing systems, supply chain and logistics, and decision support.
