The Autonomous Systems Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Villanova University is seeking to recruit multiple fully funded PhD students in Fall 2025/ Spring 2026. We are generally interested in the design, analysis, and verification of scalable and safe autonomous systems, with applications in robotics and aerospace systems. Our works focus on the intersection of control theory, numerical optimization, and machine learning. Specific areas include 1) Decision making under uncertainty, 2) Scalable, robust, and safe autonomy 3) Reinforcement learning, 4) Numerical optimization and 5) Multi-agent systems. More info can be found at our website sites.google.com.
About the PI. Dr. Chuangchuang Sun will join the department in Fall 2025. Prior to that, he has been an assistant professor in the aerospace engineering department since August 2021 and was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. He received his Ph.D. in August 2018 from the Ohio State University and a B.S. degree from Beihang University, China, in 2013, both in Aerospace Engineering. His work has been published on top journals and conferences in the areas of Control/optimization, robotics, machine learning, including, Automatica, SIAM journal on control and optimization, Transactions on Robotics, Transactions on Control of Network Systems, Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, International Conference on Machine Learning, ICRA/IROS, CDC/ACC.
About the University/Department. Villanova University, located in the Philadelphia area, is ranked #58 in the 2025 Rankings of U.S. News & World Report. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is a dynamic scholarly community of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty immersed in dynamics and controls, autonomy, and robotics. There are multiple interdisciplinary centers in the department, including the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics and Control (CENDAC), the Center for Energy-Smart Electronic Systems (ES2), Villanova Center for Analytics of Dynamic Systems (VCADS). There will also be various robotics hardware (aerial, ground, legged, wheeled) and computing resources in the PI’s lab to enable cutting-edge research in robotics and computing.
Requirements. Candidates should have a background in control, numerical optimization, reinforcement learning, and robotics. Strong programming skills and a mathematical background are encouraged. A master’s degree is a plus.
Contact. Interested candidates should apply through VU’s graduate school; Check the required tests there. The deadline for Spring admission is October 1st. Please also send a copy of your CV, transcripts, and statements to Dr. Sun at 1point3acres.com
