PhD positions at McGill University for Fall 2025
“Mechanics of Reconfigurable and Architected Metamaterials & Metastructures”

Two PhD positions are available for Fall 2025 in the leading AM3L laboratory in the Bioresource Engineering Department at
McGill University through the CSC scholarship application. The research is on the field of Mechanics of 3D Printed
Deployable and Architected Multifunctional Cellular and Smart Metamaterials for applications in soft robotics, energy, and
lightweight structures. Theoretical, computational, and experimental mechanics studies along with 3D printing will be
conducted for design and analysis, multiscale modelling, and fabrication of lightweight and shape-changing multifunctional
metamaterials and metastructures. The candidates will work under the supervision of Prof. Hamid Akbarzadeh, a Canada
Research Chair in Metamaterials and the Director of AM3L lab at McGill University.
Required qualifications for the position are:

(1) Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Mechanical engineering, Applied Mechanics, Civil Engineering (Structure), Aerospace
Engineering (Structure), Material Engineering (Computational or Additive manufacturing) or related fields.
(2) Strong background in Multiphysics and multiscale modelling, Architected materials, Lightweight composites, Smart
multifunctional materials, and Additive manufacturing. Previous experience in finite element simulation is a must.
(3) Prior Experience with Mechanical metamaterial and origami/kirigami design, Reconfigurable materials, Buckling
analysis, Homogenization techniques, Nonlinear instability analysis, Active materials, 3D/4D printing, Material
functionalization, Nonlinear finite element simulation, and Machine learning are highly desirable
(4) Proficiency in using commercial finite element packages such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, or COMSOL.
(5) Excellent programing skills using MATLAB and/or Python/C.
(6) Good publication records.
(7) Proficiency in English and high undergraduate and graduate GPA (preferably GPA>3.5 out of 4.0) for admission at
McGill University
Interested candidates should send their Cover letter (emphasizing on their previous research experience related to the
Mechanics of 3D printed or Reconfigurable Architected Cellular and Smart Metamaterials), CV, and two representative
publications (if available) to Prof. Hamid Akbarzadeh ([email protected]) by January 15, 2025. Selected
potential applicants for PhD positions are required to officially apply to McGill University by January 15, 2025.
