Join our lab at the University of Toronto!

We are excited to announce that our Robotics and Intelligent Systems Lab will be relocating from City University of Hong Kong to the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Toronto in Summer 2025. Our lab continues to focus on cutting-edge projects in hybrid locomotion, bio-inspired robotics, physical intelligence, and adaptive morphology. The University of Toronto offers an outstanding environment for world-class research, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources. U of T is consistently ranked among the top universities globally, ensuring a vibrant and collaborative research culture.

The Robotics and Intelligent Systems Lab at the University of Toronto invites exceptional undergraduate and master students with a background in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines to apply for PhD positions starting in Fall 2025. We are looking for 1-2 highly motivated students to join our research in Robotics, Bio-Inspired Robots, and Micro Aerial Vehicles.

Research areas include but are not limited to:
Bio-Inspired Robotics
Micro Aerial Vehicles
Locomotion
Adaptive Morphology and Physical Intelligence

Requirements and Application Information
Candidates holding a Master’s degree are expected to complete their PhD in four years, while those entering the program directly with a Bachelor’s degree (Direct Entry PhD) are expected to complete the PhD in five years. Full-time PhD students receive funding support during the program. Exceptional domestic Canadian students and international students with external fellowships (such as China Scholarship Council scholarships) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Interested candidates should:
Review the detailed program requirements at: mie.utoronto.ca
Contact Dr. Chirarattananon at 1point3acres.com with: CV, academic transcripts, brief statement of research interests, and information about any secured or pending fellowships.

Application Process:

Pakpong CHIRARATTANANON教授简介
Pakpong Chirarattananon will join the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto as an Associate Professor in the summer of 2025. He is currently an Associate Professor at the City University of Hong Kong. Pakpong received his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University in 2014 and a B.A. in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge.
His research is primarily centered on biologically-inspired robotic systems, micro aerial vehicles, and hybrid locomotion. Pakpong has developed highly efficient revolving-wing drones, flapping-wing robots, and multimodal multirotors, with publications in prestigious journals such as Science, Nature, and Science Robotics. His approach involves using intelligent mechanisms to address the complexities of power, dynamics, and control as he seeks to enhance the capabilities of small robotic devices through a deeper understanding of the synergy between mechanical design, actuation, dynamics, control strategies, and environmental conditions. Pakpong serves on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Robotics Research (IJRR), npj Robotics, and IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L). His contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the 2021 IEEE Transactions on Robotics King-Sun Fu Memorial Best Paper Award.
