PhD Position: Remote Sensing, AI, and Environmental Science
Start Date: Fall 2025
The Earth System Science and Data Solutions Lab (ESSDS) at Schmid College of Science and Technology, Chapman University, invites applications for a funded PhD position in Remote Sensing, Geoscience, and Artificial Intelligence.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research focused on integrating remote sensing, machine learning, and geospatial analytics to address global challenges, including climate change, water resource management, and disaster resilience. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Dr. Hesham El-Askary and Dr. Wenzhao Li.
 
Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in remote sensing and AI applications.
  • Develop data-driven methods for environmental monitoring and sustainability.
  • Contribute to ongoing projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Mentor undergraduate students and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.

 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in remote sensing, GIS, computer science, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, Google Earth Engine).
  • Interest in machine learning, satellite data, and environmental science.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

 
Funding and Benefits
The position includes:
  • Annual Salary/Stipend: $32,000 – $35,000.
  • Full tuition coverage for the duration of the program.
