导师介绍
Dr. Ninghao Liu is an assistant professor in the School of Computing at University of Georgia (UGA). He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University in 2021, M.S. from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2015. His research focuses on Explainable AI and Large Language Models, with experiences also in Graph Mining, Recommender Systems, and Health Informatics. He has published more than 80 research papers in top-tier international conferences and journals, such as KDD, WWW, ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, WSDM, CIKM, ICDM, IJCAI, AAAI, TPAMI, and Communications of the ACM. He received the Distinguished Paper Award in AMIA 2024, Outstanding Paper Award in ICML 2022, Best Paper Award Candidate in ICDM 2019, and Best Paper Award Shortlist in WWW 2019.

Dr. Xiaoming Zhai is an Associate Professor in Science Education and adjunct Associate Professor at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and the Director of ai4stem.uga.edu, a cross-campus platform for faculty members in the Mary Frances Early College of Education, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Engineering, aiming to foster interdisciplinary collaboration on using AI to advance STEM education. His research has broadly appeared in high-impact journals such as Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Studies in Science Education, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Science Education and Technology, Research in Science Education, Computers& Education, British Journal of Educational Technology, International Journal of Educational Research, Studies in Educational Evaluation, etc.

PhD Position介绍

The AI4STEM Education Center and the National GENIUS Center are recruiting talented and diligent doctoral students with backgrounds in science education, computer science, and physics to our Science Education or Artificial Intelligence program.

We offer: (a) Four-year secured funding. Based upon experience and backgrounds, we offered 16h/w (around $2200/m, usually in Year 1, or 20h/w (around $2500/m) research assistantship. (b) The project will cover tuition. (c) Wide opportunities to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines and in other institutions. d) Travel cost for conferences. Accepted students will be housed in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Education, within the science education program. Exceptional students who meet the requirements of other programs (e.g., CS or AI degree) on campus may be accepted.

Q1: 为什么有两个导师?
A1: 这条招生广告的PhD名额主要是为了我们最近的National GENIUS Center项目设置的。这个项目涉及AI+Education两个学科。Dr. Liu and Dr. Zhai负责不同的学科。最后入学的PhD学生其实只有一个名义上的正式导师,另一位老师只是作为close collaborator。如果学生是录取的CS PhD,那么Dr. Liu将作为导师;如果学生录取的是AI或者Education的PhD,那么Dr. Zhai则作为正式导师。

Q2:我应该选择CS还是AI/Education作为PhD的program?
A2:如果学生有computer science, electrical and computer engineering等背景,或者代码能力很优秀的math/statistics学生,那么可以考虑申请CS项目。如果学生的背景为非CS直接相关的理工科或者其他学科,但是有AI领域的科研经验,可以考虑申请AI的PhD项目。教育学科或者类似学科背景的学生可以申请Education的项目。之所以区分CS和AI,是因为CS的PhD项目需要学一些CS的基础课。这些课程和AI research关联不大,非科班学生学习会比较吃力。AI PhD会是一个比较折中的项目,可能适合大部分非纯CS背景的申请者。

Q3:作为交叉学科的PhD,我的博士期间的产出是怎样的?我能发CS/AI的顶会嘛?

Q4:我拥有怎样的特质,从而能使得PhD期间的学习和科研事半功倍?
A4:因为学生需要与多个领域的合作者交流,所以需要有出色的沟通交流能力。同时,我们希望学生有扎实的NLP和大语言模型的基础。教育学的背景是一个plus,但不是必须的。

Q5:这个PhD position相比于普通的CS PhD有什么特殊之处嘛?
A5:假如你的目标是去和大多数CS学生卷ICML/NeurIPS/ICLR/CVPR/ICCV,那么可能这个项目不太适合你。但是这个项目提供了一条独特的赛道---Education+AI。假如市场上有公司或者高校需要招这个方向的人,那么你的优势就会很大(PS:我个人认为科研还是要尽量避免和大多数人去卷)。另外,这个领域对于NLP/Data Mining/Trustworthy AI还是比较友好的。
