rank 这个词怎么用啊？

大家好，

写文书不经常用rank这个词吗？ 但是不太会用不太放心，比如我刚开始的用法是：
xxx was ranked in top 20 of xxx 但是我上英语论坛有人说这个不太对。 貌似不用被动rank

比较标准的用法是：　　
　"This applicant ranks in the top 5% of the 100 students I have taught in my seminar 500 course over the last five years."　　ｂｙ　ｕｃｓｄ

我现在想用这个用法可以吗？

... score ranked me as xxx in our school 可以吗？求熟悉英语的人解答。字典上看到有类似的：

all ranked sb as an excellent writer in the world...
