There is a PhD opening for Spring 2025 in Dr. Chen’s research group to work on data fusion, anomaly detection, and reinforcement learning. Dr. Chen’s research group focuses on developing anomaly detection, sequential data modeling, monitoring, and optimal learning techniques applied to quality and reliability engineering, complex manufacturing systems, and healthcare systems. The research requires algorithm development and implementation, theoretical analysis, and simulation studies. Prospective candidates are expected to be highly self-motivated with background in statistics, data science, computer science, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, automation, or other related majors. Familiarity with computing software such as Matlab, R, and/or Python is required. Successful candidates will receive full financial support including tuition, stipend and other benefits. Dr. Chen’s Biography:
Yong Chen is currently a professor and the interim Chair in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Iowa. He received the B. E. degree in computer science from Tsinghua University, China in 1998, the Master degree in Statistics and Ph. D. degree in Industrial & Operations Engineering, both from the University of Michigan in 2003. His research interests include anomaly detection, process monitoring, diagnosis, and prognosis, and maintenance decision making. He received best paper awards from IIE Transactions in 2004 and 2010. He is serving as an associate editor for Technometrics and a department editor for IISE Transactions. His current research is supported by NSF and AHRQ. He is a member of the IISE and INFORMS.
