大家好!我将于2024秋季学期入职威廉玛丽学院担任数据科学方向的助理教授 (Tenure-Track, so don't worry about the funding ^_^)。
I am looking for self-motivated PhD students to work on fundamental research in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Mining, starting from Fall 2024, Spring 2025, or Fall 2025 (earlier the better).
PhD students will be fully supported as graduate research assistant (RA), including tuition waiver + $3600 monthly stipend.
(PS: WM locates at Williamsburg, a historical small town surrounded by the so-called “DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia)” metropolitan cities) but itself enjoys a cheap life expense; you can expect a very decent Ph.D. life in Williamsburg with the RA stipend.)
(PPS: The weather here is just fantastic!)
About Me:
Dr. Yi He will join the School of Data Science at William & Mary in Fall 2024. He has been an assistant professor of Computer Science at Old Dominion University since Fall 2021. He received his Ph.D. from the Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2020, advised by Dr. Xindong Wu. He received the B.E. degree from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), China, in 2013. His research interests lie broadly in data mining, machine learning, and optimization theory and specifically in online learning, real-time decision systems, graph mining, and explainable AI. Dr. He's research has been funded by various funding agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF). He is a recipient of the IEEE TCII Volunteer Award 2022 and the NSF CRII Award 2023.
About William & Mary:
The College of William and Mary is founded and chartered in 1693, coined as one of the original eight "Public Ivies (公立常春藤)" since 1985.
Rankings: William & Mary is ranked the 72nd on the CSRankings (across all universities and disciplines) and holds a rank of 53 among all national universities and a rank of 23 among public universities, so by the US News 2024. We were higher on the list, being ~top 30 among all national universities during 2013 to 2018 and shifted to ~40 in 2019 to 2023. This ranking shift is mainly due to some methodological changes made by U.S. News & World Report, putting schools at smaller scales with smaller research expenditures in disadvantaged positions -- but anyway, "We're different, and we like it that way."
Expectations:
Applicants must demonstrate her/his background in at least one of the following areas: Computer Science/Engineering, Software/Electrical Engineering, Math/Stats, Physics, Operation Research, Control Theory, Quantitative Finance. The students are envisioned to work on one of the following research thrusts. Thus, it would be great if you 1) are highly interested in those fields or 2) can demonstrate related prior research.
Contact:
Email me at [email protected] with a title "[year/semester] PhD Application". Please specify your expected enrollment; for example, if you want to be enrolled in Fall 2025, then title it as "25 Fall PhD Application". Please include the following items in your email: 1) your CV, 2) your transcript (if available), and 3) your research interest and its alignment with the research thrusts listed in the "Expectations".
PS: Regarding item #3, I wanted to say, "please be responsible and serious". That means, don't be a machine-gunner randomly shooting emails and wishing happy accidents. Please consider the mentor-mentee relationship seriously, and "fit" is the keyword. You will need to be working on those fields anyway, so pretending to be interested (while you are indeed not) will only bring sufferings (for multiple years). Interest and enthusiasm are the major motivators for an enjoyable and smooth PhD life; if you think you are, let's talk and rock! I am here to help you achieve your ambitions.
