A postdoctoral position of clinical informatics is currently open as part of the collaborative efforts between Xellar Biosystems and City University of Hong Kong, with support from the Innovation and Technology Fund of Hong Kong. We are seeking a motivated individual with expertise in natural language processing, clinical information processing, and network analysis to pioneer advanced methods for extracting valuable medical information from literature and using the information to guide disease treatment. This position will be based at City University of Hong Kong, and the option to work remotely from Shenzhen, China, is available.
Responsibility
·Develop NLP (natural language processing) tools to extract medical information from publications, regulatory documents, or patient records.
·Collaborate with bioinformatician to integrate the information into biomedical knowledge graph.
·Devise innovative machine learning/AI approaches to predict disease progression and treatment effect based on patient data and knowledge graph.
·Communicate research by publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and presenting findings at seminars and conferences.
·Contribute to new research proposals.
QUALIFICATIONS WE REQUIRE:
·PhD in computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computational biology, bioinformatics, bioengineering, or related field with an emphasis on developing NLP tools to extract information from literature.
·Expert in natural language processing, familiar with network analysis methods and graph neural network.
·Programming skills of Python and familiar with graph database such as neo4j or others and network analysis.
·Experience in biomedical applications is a big plus.
·Record of technical accomplishments, strong written and verbal communication skills.

Dr. Zhiyong Xie is the vice president of Xellar Biosystem where he is leading the effort of building the AI & data science platform to improve the understanding of disease and treatment based on Xellar's organ-on-chips technology. Prior to joining Xellar, Dr. Xie had worked for Pfizer Inc for 19 years. His responsibilities included the study design, data analysis, and AI applications in preclinical studies, clinical trials, and drug safety research & development. Dr. Xie received Ph.D. and master’s degrees from Arizona State University and Peking University respectively. He completed post-doc training in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Haiqing Bai is the Director of Preclinical Development at Xellar. He has deep experience in developing human organ chip-based models for disease modeling and drug testing. His work in these domains have been published in many top journals. His work of using human organ chips for drug repurposing has resulted in many patents filling. Notably, he led one of the first cases of using preclinical data from human organ chips for IND submission. Dr. Bai received his B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China, his Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Rochester, and his postdoctoral training from Harvard University.
Kede Ma is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Computer Science at City University of Hong Kong (CityU). He received the B.E. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2012, the MASc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Waterloo, in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Prior to joining CityU, he was a Research Associate with Howard Hughes Medical Institute and New York University, from 2018 to 2019.
