Fall 2024_PhD Opportunity in Deep Learning Research for Conversational AI
15865
We are pleased to announce a fully funded position for a PhD student to engage in cutting-edge deep learning research on Conversational AI, speech technologies, and broader applications in sequence processing. Possible topics of research include:
● Self-supervised learning
● Continual learning
● Cooperative learning
● Interpretable neural networks
● Large Scale and small-footprint models
● Multimodal Foundation Models
● Graph neural networks
● Deep generative models
● Alternative training methods for neural networks
● Out-of-distribution generalization.
Successful candidates will be under the supervision of Prof. Mirco Ravanelli from Concordia University and Mila-Quebec AI Institute and co-supervised by Prof. Cem Subakan (Laval University and Mila-Quebec AI Institute).
Academic Affiliation: The student will be enrolled at Concordia University (Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering). Notably, the student will also be affiliated with the prestigious Mila-Quebec AI Institute. Furthermore, candidates will have the opportunity to actively contribute to the innovative SpeechBrain project.
Minimum Qualifications:
● Master's degree in Computer Science (CS), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a relevant field.
● Proficiency in machine learning and deep learning methodologies.
● Excellent programming skills, particularly in Python and PyTorch.
● Preferred: Previous experience with speech data.
● Highly considered: Previous publications in relevant conferences or journals such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ICASSP, and Interspeech.
How to Apply: Please send your CV and a brief statement of interest to Prof. Mirco Ravanelli at 1point3acres.com. Please be aware that due to the high volume of applications, we won't be able to respond to every submission. All applications will be thoroughly reviewed, but only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview. During the interview process, expect questions related to machine learning and deep learning, including coding questions.
Supervisors:
● Dr. Mirco Ravanelli is an Assistant professor at Concordia University. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Université de Montréal and Associate Member at the Mila-Quebec AI Institute. His main research interests are deep learning for sequence processing, with particular emphasis on Conversational AI. He is the author or co-author of more than 70 papers on these research topics. He worked as post-doc at the Mila-Quebec AI Institute under the supervision of the Turing’s award professor Yoshua Bengio. Mirco is an active member of the speech and machine learning communities. He is the founder and leader of the SpeechBrain project. In 2022, He received the Amazon Research Award.
● Dr. Cem Subakan is an Assistant professor at Université Laval in Computer Science and Software Engineering department, and affiliate assistant professor at Concordia University Computer Science and Software Engineering Department. He is also an Associate Academic Member at Mila-Québec AI institute. He got his PhD from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in computer science, and did a postdoc at Mila. His current research interests include Explainable AI for Speech and Audio, Multimodal Representation Learning, Generative Models for Audio, and Continual Learning. He’s a co-organizer of the ICASSP 2024 Explainable AI for Speech and Audio Workshop, and will be the general chair of IEEE Machine Learning for Signal Processing Workshop 2025. He’s an associate member of IEEE Machine Learning for Signal Processing Technical Committee.
