Prof. Sushil Kumar is an associate professor at Lehigh University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has published his research in journals such as Nature Physics, Nature Photonics, Applied Physics Letters, Optics Express, and Physical Review. His work is at the forefront of terahertz semiconductor 'quantum-cascade' laser technology, and has posted world-record results for high-temperature and high-power operation of such lasers. His primary area of research is in semiconductor optoelectronics and quantum electronics. Specifically, he pursues research in far-infrared (terahertz) and mid-infrared photonics with quantum-cascade lasers and detectors and nanostructured intersubband semiconductor devices.

Prof.Kumar’s lab, Terahertz Photonics Lab, currently has 2~3 positions available for Master and PhD students. The joining dates are flexible (Spring 2024 or Fall 2024). Full financial support will be available starting from the second year of enrollment. For the first year, it is unclear now. The prospected students will be engaged in projects to develop terahertz optoelectronics (light emitters, detectors and metasurface materials) and the potential applications in chemical and biological sensing, spectroscopy, and imaging such as sensing for detection of explosives and drugs in packaging, imaging for disease diagnosis, quality control in pharmaceutical industry. Students have chances to go through whole laser chip fabricaiton process including software design and simulation, cleanroom fabrication and performance charaterization etc.
Candidates qualifications include:
-Graduate student should finish their undergraduate training in engineering or science
-Major in but not limited to Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics.
-Motivated students with excellent semiconductor background, optics and photonics knowledge, cleanroom experience and strong programming skills (MATLAB, COMSOL).
-Willingness to learn new methods and adapt them as necessary.
-Excellent communication skills.
-Ability to operate independently within collaborative settings.
The application details can be found in graduate student handbook at Lehigh University website: engineering.lehigh.edu
